Musical Theatre (For 12-18 year olds)

Monday 4 - 5.30pm
Tutor: Andrew Chessher

Singing in the musical theatre is a skill that can elude some actors. This course will teach students more than just a basic vocal technique. It will give them an understanding of the uses of song in the theatre and break down the barriers between the song and the scene.
This course aims to give students a thorough understanding of the demands of singing in the Musical Theatre. Students will develop their acting and vocal skills through a variety of means and styles of music. Students will learn to think critically about repertoire and character and apply these new skills in a classroom and performance setting. This class will include weekly modules aimed to develop students’ singing and interpretation in a variety of genres; from early to modern musicals, as well as cabaret, choral and popular music.
The course will include elements of Vocal technique and production, Characterisation, lyric interpretation, Song analysis, Group and solo singing, Staging, Repertoire, Singing styles as well as audition practice and masterclass.

Physical Theatre (For 12-18 year olds)

Thursday 4 - 5.30pm
Tutor: Pete Blackburn

Physical Theatre: Fun for all ages, exciting, challenging and growing rapidly in popularity as a form of performance. Combining circus skills (including juggling), acro-balance, gymnastics and theatrical movement, physical theatre allows students to think differently about expression, using their bodies to create moods, and as an alternative approach to script work. Classes will include theory on safety and stretching, but will be predominantly physical. Students should be fit and ready for a challenge.

If you wish to join this class please write it clearly on your enrolment form.
Term and semester fees as per other classes.

Please call Margie McCrae on 9498 7671 should you wish to discuss this class or email info@mstyp.org.au.

Introduction to Acting (for Adults)

Learning to act is one of the most thrilling experiences you can have, because at the same time you are discovering the unexpected about yourself. Because each person is unique so is every actor. Discover your own voice! This is a creative approach to learning about acting via improvisation, theatre games, movement, vocal work and relaxation, giving each participant the courage and confidence to be themselves, while also learning about characters' intentions and goals, conflict, and the stage environment. Be prepared to be active and have fun. This is a course both for beginners and for people wanting to extend their experience.

Scenes and Monologues

In this class you will discover how the actor can get the best from herself, the actors she is working with, and the audience. The actor has to climb inside some-one else's skin, think with that person's mind and see through that person's eyes. Then the audience sees real flesh and blood characters that they can relate to and empathise with. Sometimes working with partners in a scene and sometimes using the monologue form the class will explore the techniques actors use to communicate. We will look at:

Given circumstances - Who? What? Where? Scenic intentions, characters' intentions, goals, obstacles, emotions, the stage environment and terminology - making physical and emotional contact with the space you're working in and how to analyse a scene.
